In the Beginning In 1942, Russell Gray and Robert Cone formed Graco Metal Products, in Philadelphia, PA. For 11 years, the firm fabricated machine and car parts for local manufacturers. In 1953, Gray left the firm, leaving Cone as sole owner. Cone decided to manufacture his own line of products. But what?

The answer appeared in the form of David Saint, an engineer, tinkerer, and stained glass artisan who worked for Graco. Saint, a father of 9, had often watched his wife soothe a tired or cranky baby with their backyard swing. Inspired by what he saw, he went to the drawing board.

A Star is Born 18 months of hard work later, the world's first wind-up infant swing, the Graco Swyngomatic®, was born. Graco was in the baby-products business. Everyone knew they had a hit on their hands, and an enthusiastic Graco salesman predicted that 10,000 of the swings would sell. But no one predicted that Graco would sell not 10,000, but millions of Swyngomatics in the coming years, becoming one of the world's leading manufacturers of juvenile products in the process.

From then on, whatever category it entered, Graco set the standard: the firm's Pack N' Play® Portable Playards, designed by Nate Saint, the son of the Swyngomatic's inventor, was introduced in 1987, and achieved the same kind of success as Graco's wind-up swings. The Pack N' Play is now found in millions of homes across North America. Graco raised the bar further when it introduced the Travel System, the first product that allowed you to quickly click a car seat into and out of a stroller, making life easier for mom and dad by allowing them to move a sleeping infant from house to automobile to stroller without waking the little one up.

Just Look at Us Now! Today, Graco continues its tradition of innovation, with products like the aluminum-framed Quattro TourTM stroller and the Pack 'n Play® SPORT™, which is the perfect choice for families who enjoy outdoor fun. In 1998, Graco proudly acquired Century Car Seats, combining two of the most respected brand names in baby products, and leading to innovative products like the TurboBoosterTM youth booster car seat.

Today, Graco is a Newell RubbermaidTM company, with 1500 associates worldwide. While a half-century has brought many changes to Graco, the dedication and commitment to designing and manufacturing top-quality products—products that inspire parents and babies alike—remains, and continues on.
