Bassinet Buying Guide

Bassinets
Bassinets and Cradles are an option some parents choose since it can make caring for your baby during sleep periods a little easier. The major difference between a bassinet and a cradle is that bassinets tend to be portable whereas cradles are bigger and meant to be stationary. For those parents who have homes with more than one floor, the ability to move the bassinet from room to room or floor to floor is very convenient. Over the past 10 years, there has been a change in how bassinets are manufactured. It used to be that you'd buy a plain unadorned bassinet, and then have to buy sheets, bumpers, and liners to dress it up. This process would often be costly and time consuming. Now most bassinets come as a complete set with the bumpers, sheet, mattress and even blanket already included. The average cost even with all the extras is approximately $60-$120, making this convenience a little more affordable and attractive.

If you are buying a new Bassinet or Cradle:

  1. Look for one with a sturdy bottom to support the mattress and a wide stable base.
  2. Follow the manufacturers' guidelines on the appropriate weight and size of babies who can safely use the bassinet or cradle. As a general guideline you should only be using a bassinet or cradle for approximately 3-4 months. Ask your pediatrician for their recommendation.
  3. With cradles, check to make sure that the spaces between the spindles are no larger than 2 3/8 inches (60mm).
  4. If your bassinet includes side handles for carrying, it is advised that you have a firm hold on the bassinet and don't rely on the handles alone since the bassinet can tip during transport.

Expected Cost:

Bassinets range in price from $40 to $300. The average bassinet will cost approximately $100. The majority of the bassinets are about the same, the difference in the price is reflected in the quality of the bedding. For example, a $300 bassinet will include a floor length skirt with a fabric canopy cover made with the finest fabrics. A $40 bassinet may only have a mattress pad.

Wooden cradles range in price from $80-$250 depending on the design, quality, and type of wood used. Remember, this price does not include the bedding (i.e. bumpers and sheet). However, many parents choose to buy a cradle since it's most often the one item passed on throughout families as their family heirloom.
